It's all about targeting one species at a time, giving you the chance to really dial in your technique and maybe land that trophy catch you've been dreaming about.

What to Expect on the Water

Picture this: You're out on the boat, rod in hand, with nothing but open water and endless possibilities ahead. We'll pick the best spot based on tides and conditions, making sure you're in prime position to hook into some fish. With room for up to six people, it's ideal for a family outing, a group of buddies, or even a team-building day with coworkers. Just remember, we're not packing any grub on board, so grab breakfast before you hop on and maybe pack some snacks to keep your energy up while you're reeling 'em in.

Top Catches This Season

Alright, let's talk fish. We're not messing around here in Greenport – we've got some serious gamefish on the menu. Depending on when you come out, we might be chasing after spotted weakfish, also known as sea trout to the locals. These guys put up a great fight and taste even better on the grill. Bluefish are another favorite – they're like the bulldogs of the sea, all muscle and attitude. If you're looking for a real challenge, striped bass are the kings of these waters. And let's not forget about summer flounder (we call 'em fluke) and scup (porgies to you and me). Each one requires a different approach, so we'll make sure you're rigged up right and ready to go.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Spotted Weakfish: Don't let the name fool you – these fish are anything but weak. They're known for their spotted patterns and put up a great fight on light tackle. Best time to target them is usually in the warmer months, especially around dawn or dusk. Anglers love 'em because they're not only fun to catch but also delicious to eat.

Bluefish: These guys are the adrenaline junkies of the sea. Bluefish are aggressive feeders and will hit just about anything that moves. They're most active in the summer and early fall, and when they're running, the action is non-stop. Be ready for some serious pulling – these fish don't give up easily!

Summer Flounder: Also known as fluke, these flatfish are masters of camouflage. They like to hang out on sandy or muddy bottoms, waiting to ambush their prey. Catching them requires a bit of finesse, but when you hook into a big one, it's like reeling in a dinner plate. They're most abundant from late spring through early fall.

Striped Bass: The crown jewel of East Coast inshore fishing. Stripers, as we call 'em, can grow to impressive sizes and are known for their powerful runs. They start showing up in spring and stick around until fall, with the biggest ones often caught in the cooler months. Landing a big striper is a badge of honor for any angler.

Scup: These little powerhouses, also called porgies, might not be the biggest fish in the sea, but they make up for it in numbers and taste. They're abundant in the summer months and are perfect for kids or beginners looking to get in on the action. Plus, they're excellent eating – nothing beats a fresh scup fry.

Learn more about the species

Bluefish

Bluefish are aggressive fighters that'll give you a real workout. These toothy predators usually run 3 to 10 pounds around here, though the big ones can top 20. Look for them churning up bait schools near the surface - we call that a "bluefish blitz." They migrate through our waters from June to October, following schools of baitfish. Blues are fast swimmers and voracious eaters, often feeding in a frenzy. Anglers love targeting them for their strong runs and acrobatic jumps when hooked. Their oily meat has a distinctive flavor - some folks love it, others not so much. Pro tip: use wire leaders, as blues will slice through regular line with those razor-sharp teeth. When you see birds diving, that's a good sign bluefish are feeding below. These hard-hitting fish will test your gear and your skills, making for an exciting day on the water.

Bluefish

Scup

Scup, also called porgy, are a great target if you're after steady action and good eating. These silvery, deep-bodied fish usually run 8 to 14 inches, though some can reach 18 inches and 4 pounds. You'll find them near rocky bottoms, reefs, and pilings from May to October. Scup are bottom feeders with strong jaws for crushing shells, so they're often caught while targeting other species. They're not big fighters, but they're fun on light tackle and tasty on the plate. To catch scup, try bottom fishing with small hooks baited with clams, squid, or worms. Use just enough weight to hold bottom. A good tip: when you feel a bite, give it a second before setting the hook - scup have small mouths and often need time to get the bait. These fish are perfect for beginners or anyone who just wants to bend a rod and fill a cooler. Plus, they make great live bait for larger predators like striped bass.

Scup

Spotted Weakfish

Spotted Weakfish are a popular catch around here, usually running 12 to 16 inches long. These silvery fish with dark spots love hanging out near sandy bottoms and seagrass beds in our shallow coastal waters. We typically target them from May through October when the water warms up. Weakfish put up a decent fight and make for some tasty eating too. They've got big canine teeth, so watch your fingers! To land one, try slow-retrieving a colorful lure near the surface - when you see a weakfish approach, speed up your retrieve a bit to trigger their predator instinct. They've got soft mouths though, so set the hook gently. These guys are ambush predators, so look for them around structures where they might be lying in wait for prey. Overall, weakfish are a fun species to target if you want some steady action and a good meal at the end of the day.

Spotted Weakfish

Striped Bass

Striped bass are the crown jewel for many anglers here. These powerful fish average 10 to 30 pounds, but 50-pounders aren't uncommon. We find them along the coast, in estuaries, and even up rivers. Stripers migrate through our waters from spring to fall, with prime fishing from May to October. They're structure-oriented, so look for them around jetties, sandbars, and rips. Anglers love targeting stripers for their strong fights, size, and excellent table fare. Live eels or bunker are top baits, but they'll hit lures too. A local trick: fish the tide changes, especially at dawn or dusk when stripers often feed aggressively. Watch for birds working bait schools - that's a good sign bass are below. Whether you're casting from shore or trolling from a boat, hooking into a big striper is an experience you won't forget. Just remember to check current regulations, as size and bag limits can change to protect the population.

Striped Bass

Summer Flounder

Summer flounder, or fluke, are a favorite around here. These flatfish usually run 15 to 20 inches, though trophy-size "doormats" over 10 pounds aren't unheard of. You'll find them on sandy or muddy bottoms, often near structures like reefs or wrecks. We target fluke from May through September when they move inshore to feed. They're ambush predators with both eyes on one side, lying camouflaged on the bottom waiting to snatch up prey. Anglers enjoy catching fluke for their fight and their delicious white meat. To land one, try drifting or slow-trolling with a bucktail jig tipped with a strip of squid or fish. When you feel a hit, resist the urge to set the hook right away - give it a second or two, as fluke often grab the bait sideways before turning it to swallow. These "chameleons of the sea" can be tricky, but they're a blast to catch and even better to eat.
